About David Burgess
David has been a fundraiser for nearly 20 years. In this time he’s spoken to a lot of funders and written a lot of funding proposals, securing 7- (and 6- and 5- and 4- and 3-) figure gifts for a lot of organisations in the process. He’s helped secure grants for everything from toilets to opera tours, gardens to gold necklaces, and core costs to capital campaigns.
Recent highlights include:
- Helping write the bid that secured a first-time applicant to Arts Council England one of the largest Round 1 Culture Recovery Fund grants (annoying the Telegraph in the process)
- Helping one charity find success with two funders that had previously turned them down on multiple occasions
- Helping Ipswich Museum raise the match-funding for a major redevelopment of their galleries
As part of his work as a consultant and trainer at Apollo Fundraising, David has also set up and administered a number of funding rounds, processing real applications in order to award real grants. These have often been run in conjunction with fundraising conferences, and over the last ten years David has used developed these into opportunities to give fundraisers a glimpse into the grant-making process from the funder’s perspective. From early-career fundraisers to experienced veterans, previous participants have always come away with ways to improve their own grant-fundraising approaches.
In developing this standalone session, David has interviewed Trustees and Grant Managers from a wide-range of funders – some you’ll have heard of, some you might not. The insights they’ve shared have been used to provide you with the most realistic experience possible.
